IBM says sale of low-end server business gets regulator approval

$

(Reuters) – International Business Machines Corp IBM.N said on Friday that U.S. regulators had approved the $2.3 billion sale of its low-end server business to Lenovo Group Ltd 0992.HK, as the company continues its shift to more profitable software and services like cloud computing and data analytics.

IBM has already divested $16 billion in annual revenue over the past decade from low-margin businesses like personal computers and printers.

The approval by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States came despite CIFUS members’ concern, first reported by the Wall Street Journal earlier this year, that IBM servers used in the Pentagon’s networks could be accessed remotely by Chinese spies and compromised.

Lenovo has been through the secretive CFIUS process three times before and has won approval each time, according to a source familiar with the process.

CFIUS, an interagency group chaired by the Treasury Secretary, reviews deals that could bring U.S. businesses under foreign ownership and is required by law to assess any transaction involving a state-owned firm.

Lenovo said in a statement that it remains on track to close the IBM server deal by the end of the year.

Analysts say Lenovo will likely find it easier than IBM to sell the x86 servers to Chinese companies as Beijing tries to localize its IT purchases in the wake of revelations about U.S. surveillance.

7 Simple Steps to Build Your Own Business

$

While some people are happy to be worker bees, others dream of being able to run the show.

If being a business owner is on your bucket list, you’re in luck. The process isn’t nearly as difficult as you might think.

Of course, there are many ways to start and run a business, and this article isn’t intended as legal advice or a guarantee of your success. However, if you want to run a business that is a step above selling Tupperware on the side, here are seven steps to help you hit the ground running.

Step 1: Start with the right idea

Your successful business starts with the right idea. How do you know if you have the right idea? Let’s answer that question by asking some more questions.

  • Are you passionate about it? Or at least mildly interested?
  • Do you have expertise in the area?
  • Does your idea fill a need?
  • Can it be profitable?
  • What’s the competition like?
  • Do you have access to any needed resources or supplies?

The best ideas often seem to be the simple ones. If you have to go to great lengths to explain why someone might want to buy your service or product, it may be time to head back to the drawing board.

Maybe take a look at other areas with similar demographics and see what businesses are thriving there but aren’t available in your local community. Talk to family and friends or head online to check out what other businesses are doing and how you could possibly do it better. Perhaps you have a hobby that could be turned into a business.

Step 2: Create a plan

Once you have a fairly good idea of your business focus, it’s time to start making some plans – not plans in your head but plans on paper.

Now, some people get stuck on Step One because they fear making a mistake in their business selection. The real mistake is letting the idea phase paralyze you.

At this point, your idea doesn’t need to be golden. You’re not spending any money on it yet. You can change it, or even pitch it, if it ends up not working out.

Creating a formal plan is one way to decide whether your business will be a winner or loser. And by formal plan, I’m not talking about a shiny dossier or professional business plan. I’m talking about you and a notebook sitting down and writing out what needs to happen to transform your “makes-me-giddy” idea into an actual moneymaking business.

My favorite business planning method is to reverse engineer the process. In other words, start with what you envision your established business looking like. Then, look backward and determine what needs to happen to reach that ending point. Make sure you are writing down firm dates for each step in the process.

Don’t worry if you’re not sure whether your timeline is realistic. That’s what Step Three is for.

Step 3: Bring on the experts

As a new business owner, you need a little outside perspective. Fortunately, there are numerous places to get free and unbiased advice.

You can read more about your options in this article regarding the three resources every new business owner needs to know.

I will add that when you get this unbiased advice, please take it to heart. As an unfortunate example, a few years back a couple in my community poured their life savings and retirement money into a business despite being advised by a counselor from SCORE that it wasn’t a good idea. They disregarded that advice and the business failed, along with their marriage.

Step 4: Take care of the legalese

I won’t belabor this point, partly because I don’t want to bore you and partly because it varies so widely from state to state and municipality to municipality.

However, you do need to take care of the legal and financial details before launching your business. That may include selecting the right business structure (the Small Business Administration has a good rundown of the various types or you could read our very own Stacy Johnson’s advice), opening separate bank accounts, applying for tax identification numbers, and receiving any necessary permits or licenses required in your jurisdiction.

Advisers from the SBA and other resources may be able to help you navigate the necessary paperwork and provide basic guidance. If you’re planning to spend a lot of money on your venture, you may want to pay an attorney to make sure everything is on the up and up before your business launches.

Step 5: Find some cash

No, there are no government grants for small businesses.

Some small-business owners open their own wallets or fire up a credit card for startup capital. If your pockets aren’t that deep, you could try crowdfunding or, for service-based businesses, use the Internet to minimize startup costs. There’s also microlending, friends and family members, or bank loans to consider.

For more information on your options, including government small-business loan programs, go to this article about how to find money to start a business.

Step 6: Market, market, market

You have a plan. You have the paperwork. You have the cash.

It’s time to launch!

A successful business is as much about having a good marketing plan as it is about having a good idea. You need to let others know about your fabulous new product or service, and asking your Facebook friends to share a status update simply isn’t going to cut it.

Since your business is new, you probably don’t have a lot of money to spend, but that’s OK. Constant Contact has put together this rather solid list of 10 ways you can market on a shoestring.

Step 7: Grow smart, not fast

Finally, don’t make the mistake of getting too big too fast. Hiring on employees right away can stretch your budget thin. Expanding your product line or clientele rapidly could mean quality suffers and customers are lost.

Slow and steady wins the race, and the same can be said for business success. Make sure you have the capital and the market data to back up any expansion. Go back to your original plans and build upon those rather than haphazardly jumping on opportunities as they arise.

Starting a small business doesn’t have to be difficult or complex. These simple steps will get you pointed in the right direction and your business off on the right foot.

ANEW Business Solutions Announces Launch of Auction Site branded "The Select Source"

IRVING, Texas, Aug. 16, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — via PRWEB – ANEW Business Solutions has launched an auction site to compete with other traditional, well known, auction sites as part of ANEW’s continued focus on growth and expansion. The site, branded The Select Source, is available for buyers to register and buy product in an auction style format at http://www.theselectsource.com. The Select Source will be available for seller registration later this year.

“We’re excited about the launch. The need for an alternative online auction marketplace to compete with the traditional auction sites was clear to us and our buyers. As we saw fees, business practices and treatment of sellers continue to be a rising concern we knew there was an opportunity to compete in this space,” said Virginia Beshirs, CEO at ANEW Business Solutions.

ANEW has moved all of their individual consumer sales from eBay to The Select Source, around 250,000 auctions annually.

Enhancements Planned

Many users of the site’s beta test have provided valuable input into future enhancements and The Select Source has begun to implement a strategic direction that will target a buyer and seller base that is becoming more and more displeased with using other auction marketplaces.

“Our plans for the coming months are focused on enhancing the customer experience and marketing to a targeted audience of buyers and sellers,” said Rachel Blackwood of The Select Source. “We will be launching some unique features that will be differentiators for us in the coming months. Our team has sold millions of items in online auction marketplaces and we look forward to changing the experience for buyers and sellers.”

The Select Source Users

Registered users on the site are able to bid against each other in an effort to win auctions for various products. The buying process will expand past auctions and will offer additional tools and a heightened buying experience soon. Users can visit The Select Source at http://www.theselectsource.com.

Founded in 2004, ANEW Business Solutions is a leader in providing innovative solutions for product liquidation and wholesale of a variety of product types including, consumer electronics, computers, housewares, tools, small appliances and many others. 10 Business Errors To Fix Before Your Customers Leave You

$
0
0

No matter how loyal and engaged, customers will leave your business from time to time, never to return.  It’s part of the changeable human condition.

To pick an extreme example, customers sometimes [spoiler alert] will die. This irrevocably marks the end of your commercial relationship, assuming you aren’t in the funeral-deathcare business. Ditto, by and large, when a customer moves far away, goes bankrupt, or goes on a diet that excludes wheat, cheese, and tomatoes–and you run a chain of pizzerias.

But other customer issues can be caught while they are less than fatal. They’re the stumbling blocks I see over and over in my work as a customer service consultant and company culture specialist that are worth addressing before they get out of hand, while the customer is still your customer, even if not as enamored of you as she once was. (You know the signs of a customer in this state: the dismissive or distracted looks, the rushed tone of voice on the phone, the longer lapses between visits.)

1. You haven’t kept up with changing customer expectations of speed.  You’re working/turning around projects/shipping absolutely as quickly as you ever did.  But to the customer, “same as it ever was” feels slower in the year 2014, as mobile, amazon.com, netflix, make “instant” the new norm. In customer support, as I find myself saying over and over these days, proudly following a policy that “we strive to return all calls within 24 hours” means “we strive to get back to you in 36 days” if you convert it to Internet time.  Which your customers inevitably do.

2. You don’t offer customers the self-service they’ve grown accustomed to elsewhere. You aren’t providing them self-service options that they have grown used to with other businesses in other industries. You, of course, don’t see this lack of self-service as a problem, because you’re everywhere for your customer, you would do anything for your customer.  But strangely, customers often prefer to do things for themselves, for a variety of reasons: Because it’s two in the morning.  Because they’re too tipsy to talk on the phone. Because they’re trying to do business with you on the sly, while at their day job—and their keystrokes are less likely to give them away than a phone call would.

3. You haven’t improved your return policies and guarantees to keep up with the times: You have the same return policies you’ve always had. But the world has moved on. Yes, you’d do anything for your customer, even take back something you don’t guarantee.  But they don’t know this, and they’re uncomfortable asking.  It’s time to post a new, more lenient policy, to bring yourself visibly in line with the amazon-led world.

4. You don’t offer the time flexibility that your customers want today. Your business hours, and/or your customer support hours, are every bit as long as they’ve ever been.  But it’s not good enough any more, and your customer feels you’re inconveniencing them by not being open enough.

5. Your quality has stayed the same but the game has changed. You’re still serving the same factory farmed tomatoes, and still calling them vine ripened. But your customers have moved on, and expect to to have done the same.

6. Your customers don’t think you care anymore. It’s not that they think you’re “uncaring,” but they think that you’ve taken them, and their business, for granted.  Treating 100,000 customers like you treat the first 100 is hard to do. I swear to you it is worth it. Or you will be back to 100, ultimately.

7.  The little things in your business feels  a bit musty, a bit dated. The language you use is out of date. Your fax number is too prominent a part of your letterhead. You’re failing to keep up with the little stuff that needs to be updated in the course of the year, and in the course of technological changes: Your voicemail still advertises your deal on dial up modems, or gives directions as if GPSs haven’t been invented. Your July 4th decorations are up in September.

8. Your hiring standards are slipping. You used to hire scientifically. Now you do it by hunch.  Or, you still do it “scientifically,” but your science is out of date, and no longer reflects the profile of employee you need in your present business.

9. You don’t really notice your work, or your place of work, anymore, as clearly as you used to before business became, for you, routine. Developing this kind of blindness is natural for every human, including those of us in business. It’s hedonic adaptation. But you have to fight actively against it.   You need to strive to observe your business the way that your customers — who may come in a different entrance, use your system without an auto-login that makes it easy for you, who have to fight for parking where yours is reserved – observe what’s bugging them about the way you do business.

10. Grit has accumulated over time, in your relationship with the customer:  Here and there, you haven’t returned a call, you’ve sent an abrupt email, you’ve made what looks to them like an overcharge and you didn’t explain why the charge was actually valid.  It may be time to check in and clear the air.

Business grad creates cupcake bakery on Cape Cod

In a brightly colored kingdom on Main Street, where larger-than-life cupcakes loom over bright tables while Chuck Berry sings “Twist and Shout,” a freshly minted business-school grad sets out each morning to bake just the right number of no-preservative cupcakes to feed people coming to visit “Little Miss Cupcape.”

Too few cupcakes, and she has to close the doors early. Too many, and she must give them away at a local homeless shelter, at the police and fire stations, at the slip where her family’s boat is moored.

OK, that is a bit of a fairy-tale beginning to this story, but once you visit the shop and talk with owner Taylor Stump, 22, you get the feeling there is a bit of magic involved here.

“I was never planning on graduating from college in May and having a business the next month. But if we didn’t do it now, someone else would do it,” Stump says. “My mom was my fairy godmother. Actually my whole family was.”

While Stump was taking final exams, her mom, Tonya Stump, was buying antique dining sets, sanding away dings and painting them in cheery red, pink, aqua and yellow. Friends and family — dad, Kevin, and siblings Sydney, 21, Avery, 17 and Rhyees, 9 — helped transform a back room into a birthday party room.

Dubbed “the cupcake queen” in high school in Ohio, Stump, who lives at home with her parents who relocated to the Cape, says she’s been lucky for other help as well: a local pastry chef who helped better organize the professional kitchen, and Mark Dirico, a craftsman and builder of real houses, who designed the Cape Cod cottage boxes “Little Miss Cupcapes” come nestled in.

Getting to the shop before 6 a.m. six days a week, Stump makes 12 varieties of filled cupcakes ($3.50 each) from scratch — including Buoy Buckeye, Chocolate Shark Attack, Lighthouse Lemon and Red Sox Red Velvet — usually making three dozen of each, but increasing the numbers on rainy days which, she says, seem to be busier. She’s baking faster six weeks in, meaning she doesn’t have to delay the store’s daily opening as she did a couple of times after the bakery’s June 15 debut because the cupcakes weren’t ready. Nothing is frozen or kept overnight, so it’s a very immediate business.

“Homemade cupcakes are a denser, heavier product than store-bought, which have air whipped into them,” Stump says, noting that stock is held and often frozen.

The homemade sweets need to be eaten that day, as they will get stale and the frosting doesn’t hold its shape long without refrigeration because it contains only butter, sugar and vanilla — no hydrogenated fats to stabilize it.

There’s also a create-your-own bar for people who want it their way. An employee makes the cupcake based on your choices. Options include flavors of cupcake and frosting (or no frosting since the filling itself is sweet), with candy toppings (50 cents each) and even a scoop of Cape Cod Creamery’s vanilla ice cream (that combo comes in a bowl).

“Now that’s a cool thing,” says Ian Clark, a tourist from Saratoga, New York. “We have cupcake shops, Betty’s Cake, Patty’s Cake, but I’m not sure we have make-your-own.”

Stump says she’s well aware of the competition and of trendsetters who say the cupcake — after years of replacing cakes at weddings and other fancy events — is on its way down.

“I know Crumbs just went out of business, but I don’t think they did things right. There wasn’t enough variety,” says Stump, whose parents are helping get “Little Miss Cupcape” off the ground, in what Stump calls a tradition of family support for entrepreneurs.

“A cupcake is meant to be shared with one person. I want there to be an experience when people come in.”

While you can expect a ’50s and ’60s rock-and-roll soundtrack in the store, you won’t find Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler there every time as he was a few weeks ago. The little shop quickly filled up with tourist — many tweeting and posting to Facebook — when Tyler stopped in.

“He was just a kid in a candy shop. He was awesome,” Stump says. “I was star-struck, but I kept my cool. I was professional.”

Stump says, “I’m ready, I think. I’m ready for cupcakes to be my life.”

A Business School Wonders: Why Not Teach High-Frequency Trading?

Business schools have long ties to high-frequency trading, the platforms that let computers buy and sell securities in milliseconds but have been declaimed by critics for making markets riskier and more volatile. Professors hone sophisticated trading algorithms, and students have gone on to lead some of the country’s largest electronic-trading firms. Now, at least one business school is considering taking that relationship to the next level.

The dean of Imperial College Business School in London sees an educational opportunity in what he says is a rising demand for the people behind the algorithms, despite declining profits across the industry, which reaped $1 billion in 2012, down from $5 billion in 2009, according to a Bloomberg Businessweek report.

“The fact is that even today there is [a] lot of high-frequency trading going on, lots of people trading on quantitative models,” said G. “Anand” Anandalingam, Imperial’s dean, in an interview with the Economist. “The question we are grappling with is: If there is huge demand for those sorts of people, and we are able to produce students who can do that really well, should we not be in that business?”

In the interview, Anandalingam noted that “at some level a business school like us has to have a strong ethics education.” The morality of high-frequency trading has been a matter of pitched debate, especially since Michael Lewis, who writes for Bloomberg View, released a critical book on the subject earlier this year. The industry has come under increased scrutiny, and the Securities and Exchange Commission has launched a probe into 10 high-frequency trading firms, according to a Reuters report last month.

“The problem with high-frequency trading right now is that there’s a perception that for the little guy, the markets aren’t fair,” SEC Commissioner Daniel Gallagher told CNBC earlier this year. “That perception to me is a reality. It’s something we need to address.”

Imperial’s dean seemed to acknowledge the potential risks of training the next leaders in the ways of an industry that some have accused of fundamentally skewing the playing field for regular investors.

“I have a personal dilemma. We want to train our students to be successful. At the same time we want to make sure their success doesn’t lead to calamities around the world,” said Anandalingam. Referring to speed trading, he said, “You can’t wish it away. And it is not illegal.”

Anandalingam also said that teaching the quantitative foundation of high-speed trading would not be a stretch for Imperial, which is “known for science and technology.”

Several prominent business school faculty members have focused on high-frequency trading in their research. Professors at Columbia Business SchoolChicago Booth School of Business, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management have investigated how profitable electronic trading is, the culpability HFT firms may have for the so-called Flash Crash of 2010—when a software glitch sent markets into disarray—and whether the industry makes it faster and easier to trade securities.

In fact, David Whitcomb, whom Fortune magazine calls “the father of high-frequency trading,” started the first modern high-speed trading firms while at Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Management. In between teaching finance classes, Whitcomb developed formulas that predicted future changes in a stock’s price. He founded Automated Trading Desk, or ATD, to mine a strategy that’s become the raison d’être of a billion-dollar industry: speed, measured in flashes of time. Today, speed-trading firms compete for a one-millionth-of-a-second advantage. But in 1988, all Whitcomb had to do was be better by one second.

“Not only did ATD have a better idea of where prices were headed, it executed trades within one second—a snail’s pace by today’s standards, but far faster than what anyone else was doing then,” reported my colleague Matt Philips. “Whenever a stock’s price changed, ATD’s computers would trade on the offers humans had entered in the exchange’s order book before they could adjust them, and then moments later either buy or sell the shares back to them at the correct price.”

Whitcomb sold ATD to Citigroup (C) in 2007 for $680 million. He’s now working on building a tennis racquet with an oversize sweet spot, according to Fortune.

Business editor fined over stalking

The Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday business editor has been fined £500 and given a three-year non-harassment order for stalking a female PR consultant.

Terry Murden, 57, from Edinburgh, was found guilty last month of stalking Nicki Sturzaker, 39, between 27 June and 4 October, 2013.

He had denied causing her fear and alarm by going to her flat uninvited, leaving unwanted gifts and notes.

He denied uttering threats, contacting her employers and writing about her.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court also heard earlier how Murden repeatedly sent unwanted emails to Ms Sturzaker.

Murden had previously had a relationship with Ms Sturzaker.

In her evidence, Ms Sturzaker told the court she was employed as a consultant with the PR firm, Big Partnership, when she was introduced to Murden in 2011.

She said at first their relationship was “purely work” but that had changed about a year later.

Repeated emails

In his evidence, Murden said saying he had cost Ms Sturzaker’s job was totally unfounded.

Murden admitted sending two or three emails to Ms Sturzaker because he had not had any word from her.

“She had suddenly disappeared” he said. “I got no contact emails were unwanted, or gifts were unwanted or notices from the police. She simply disappeared”.

Defence solicitor, Jim Stephenson, said the relationship between him and Ms Sturzaker, had “stops and starts and Mr Murden had difficulty coming to terms with the ending of the relationship”.

He did accept with hindsight that he should not have sent her repeated emails.

The lawyer said the conviction could have serious consequences for Murden’s employment, as investigations into that had still not reached a conclusion.

With the possible loss of his employment, he would have no income and had a mortgage on the family home and rent for the flat where he was living at present.

Mr Stephenson said his client’s relationship with his wife was quite strong and added: “I understand that they live separately, but it may well be there could be reconciliation”.

Sentencing Murden, Sheriff Donald Corke told him: “The offence of which you were found guilty is a statutory offence of stalking and the fear and alarm you caused Ms Sturzaker is your responsibility, not hers.”

Fining Murden £500, Sheriff Corke said that because he was a first offender and there had been no problems while he was on bail, he would place him on a three-year non-harassment order.

“That will take you to the age of 60 and enable both of you to get on with your lives” he said.

DUBLIN–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/vf3g3m/internet_of) has announced the addition of the “Internet of Things (IoT): Business Opportunities 2015-2025″ report to their offering.

The Internet of People runs to billions of devices already. The Internet of Things will involve ubiquitous smart objects that sense and communicate directly over the internet creating better data without human intervention. Its time has come because there are now enough IP addresses available for tens of billions of items, hardware costs are now affordable and large companies are backing it. There are far more things than people so it could overtake the IoP business eventually. In 2024, tens of billions of smart objects are likely to be involved.

Some call the Internet of Things (IoT) as encompassing the Internet of People (ubiquitous internet enabled personal electronics) but the two are very different in construction, applications and maturity. This report concentrates exclusively on the new phenomenon of the IoT, using Cisco terminology for smart objects with IP addresses and usually with sensing i.e. sensor networks oriented. RFID is scarcely involved. Key are microcontrollers, potentially billions a year, with sensor interfaces and wireless interfaces.

These will serve human needs from medical to entertainment without human intervention every time. A huge business awaits in converting networks to IP and providing security and links to legacy systems. It involves deciding whether to perform analytics in the device or in the network, and goals for analytics such as anomaly detection, prediction, comparison, or optimization.

Key Topics Covered:

1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS

2. INTRODUCTION

3. THE LATEST INTERNET OF THINGS

4. APPLICATIONAL SECTORS, IOT IN ACTION

5. IOT SYSTEMS ISSUES, IMPEDIMENTS, INVESTMENT

6. STANDARDS, M2M AND IOT STRUCTURE

7. INTERVIEWS AND MEETINGS 2014
